You don’t have to head to Vail or Colorado to find great skiing. There’s plenty of fun, challenging and family-friendly ski resorts right in the Washington D.C. area that will help you get out and enjoy everything winter has to offer. Now, winter may seem forever away, but it’s never too early to start planning your next ski vacation. So here are a few ski resorts that can add a little more vertical to your next D.C. trip.

Whitetail Mountain Resort

Mercersburg, Pennsylvania

About one and a half hours out of Washington D.C., White Tail Mountain is one of the closest skiing destinations to D.C. It straddles Two Top Mountain just past Hagerstown, MD in southern Pennsylvania. The resort offers 23 trails, with just about the same amount of blue and green slopes as black and double-black diamond, making it an excellent choice for novice skiers and experts. They also have a snow tubing park to add a little more family fun.

Liberty Mountain Resort

Fairfield, Pennsylvania

Another excellent choice that also only about an hour and a half from Washington D.C. is Liberty Mountain. It is once again in southern Pennsylvania, but on the east side of Hagerstown, MD heading towards Gettysburg ,PA. This mountain has a front and back side with trails and vertical drop of 620 feet, once again providing plenty of ski fun for any level skier. They also light the runs until 10pm for some fun-filled night skiing.

Massanutten Resort

Massanutten, Virginia

A bit more of a drive, but at an elevation of 2,922 feet, Massanutten Resort is well worth it. Its about two and half hours west of Washington D.C. near Harrisonburg, VA. The resort offers 70 skiable acres, suitable for all levels of skier or snowboarder. They also have snow tubing, ice skating and terrain-based learning taught by experienced instructors for anyone wishing to master the slopes.

Wisp Resort

McHenry, Maryland

You’ll find this laid-back, family-friendly mountain 3 hours from Washington D.C. next to the scenic Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland. One of the largest resorts in the area, it’s on 172 acres with 33 trails that are technical and longer than what you’ll find closer to Hagerstown, MD. They cater to families with a separate section just for kids. There are also a ski houses that provide a ski-in/ski-out access as well full-service hotel accommodations right on the mountain.

Roundtop Mountain Resort

Lewisberry, Pennsylvania

Heading back closer to D.C., Roundtop Mountain is another great choice close to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and only about 2 hours from the capital. The resort has 9 lifts heading to 16 trails over 104 acres of terrain. The difficulty levels are divided fairly evenly, providing a fun for beginners and novices. You’ll find the most difficult runs along the top and to the left and easier ones as you move lower and to the right. There is also night skiing, daycare, dining, tubing, and lessons and rentals available.
