Idaho might not be the first place you think of when it comes to world-class skiing, but this hidden gem of a state really should top your must-ski list. The state has more than 29,000 vertical feet of terrain, epic steeps, vista views and snow-covered backcountry and much of it surrounds Ketchum.

With over 200 inches of snow a year, make Idaho your next ski destination. Check out these favorite power playgrounds within a few hours’ drive of Ketchum.

Sun Valley

Ketchum, ID

A four-minute drive from Ketchum, Sun Valley is one of Idaho’s best known ski resorts. It offers some of the steepest trails in the country and an estimated 120 bluebird days per season. Eighteen lifts service the 2,434 acres that span two mountains, Bald Mountain and Dollar Mountain. There are 212 named runs and a 3,400-foot vertical drop. You’ll find everything from casual to luxury accommodations nearby as well as dining, music and evening entertainment.

Rotarun Ski Area

Hailey, ID

Rotarun is far from Idaho’s largest ski resort, but it’s a local favorite. And what it lacks in size, it makes up for in heart. Less than half an hour’s drive from Ketchum, just outside Hailey, Rotarun is a small, nonprofit ski area. The resort gets an average of 90” of snow a year, has a 441-foot vertical drop and one lift for its 8 runs.  The little mountain with a big heart has been a hub of the community since 1948 and offers up affordable fun and true mountain-town culture for all.

Solider Mountain

Fairfield, ID

Soldier Mountain sits high in the Sawtooth Mountain Range a little more than an hour from Ketchum. It’s off the beaten path, but you’ll find a laid-back, family-friendly environment that includes 25 runs, glades, bowls, tree skiing, backcountry cat skiing and twilight skiing. The resort averages 250” of snowfall each year, has a 1,425-foot vertical drop and more than 1,100 acres of skiable terrain.

Pomerelle Mountain Resort

Albion, ID

Less than three hours from Ketchum, Pomerelle Mountain Resort is tucked in the Albion Mountains and offers a secluded, intimate ski experience. The resort offers terrain for every level of skier with 24 perfectly groomed trails across 500 acres and a 1,000-foot vertical drop. It may not have all the bells and whistles of the big resorts, but you’ll find spectacular views and knee-deep snow.

Bogus Basin

Boise County, ID

If it’s big mountain feel you want, Bogus Basin is worth the three hour drive from Ketchum. Idaho’s second largest ski resort and the county’s largest nonprofit recreation area, Bogus Basin has 90 named runs, 2,600 acres of skiable terrain and a 1,800-foot vertical drop. You’ll also find Nordic trails, a tubing hill and Idaho’s only mountain coaster. The resort has 10 lifts, including four high-speed quads and a variety of terrain for all ages and abilities.
