Winter Park
Winter Park is not only the closest large ski resort to Denver, but it’s also one of the most affordable ones. The ski resort has two main interconnected mountains with over 3,000 acres of skiable terrain. Winter Park caters to beginners and intermediates and is great for families. Mary Jane is more difficult with black diamond mogul runs. Lodging is available in the Village at the base of the resort. However, just a few miles away in the town of Winter Park, you will also find lodging options along with access to more restaurants, bars and shops.
Vail Mountain Resort
Even non-skiers have heard of Vail. It’s the envy of every skier, known far and wide as one of the very best ski resorts in the world. It’s less than 100 miles from downtown Denver or about a two-hour drive from the airport. The resort is big with more than 30 lifts and it’s runs are spread over several mountains and offer something for every kind of skier: long blue cruisers, wide-open easy greens, incredible bowls, tree skiing, and thigh-busting moguls. At the base, a long winding road will take you through the village and past countless restaurants with patios and retail shops.
Keystone Resort
About 73 miles from Denver or an hour and a half drive is Keystone Resort. The ski resort spans three mountains, Dercum, North Peak and Outback. It offers an abundance of skiing for every level with the terrain getting harder the farther back you go. With nearly 20 feet of snow each year and an impressive uphill capacity thanks to a network of 20 lifts and a gondola, Keystone is a must. Keystone Village offers a lively spot to grab a bite with lots of restaurants with sunny patios. Accommodations can be found at the base area as well all along the road to Silverthorne.
Breckenridge Ski Resort
Locally know as Breck, Breckenridge is another great ski resort near Denver you won’t want to miss. Spread out over five mountains, it boasts the highest chairlift in North America at an amazing 12,840 feet. The lower areas have gentle inclines and are a haven for blue and green runs. The runs get more challenging the further up the mountain you go. Getting an impressive 30 feet of snow a year, the resort is able to stay open late into the season providing for some legendary spring skiing. Unlike other base areas, the town of Breckenridge is a true town with a mining history. It is full of great shops and restaurants with plenty of options for accommodations.
Loveland Ski Area
Only a 50-minute drive from downtown Denver, Loveland offers a great ski with a much shorter drive. It is smaller than many of the larger resorts in the area, but it still offers terrain for every skill level. Lift tickets cost bit less than the resorts as well and you won’t find the on-site lodging options if you’re hoping for an extended stay, but there are still ski rentals and shops, and hot food at the cafeteria.
