This time of year, New England is a skier’s paradise and the White Mountains of New Hampshire offer some of the area’s finest ski resorts. There are over 30 downhill and cross-country ski resorts in the White Mountains. Plus New Hampshire’s Lakes region and Dartmouth region offer the closest skiing options to Boston. The rest of the New England state is dotted with smaller ski areas that are great for beginners and families.

New Hampshire’s Best Ski Resorts

Whether you are flying in for a week or a local searching for something new, here are five top-rated New Hampshire ski resorts to check out.

Bretton Woods

New Hampshire’s biggest and most popular ski resort is Bretton Woods. It has topped Ski Magazine’s Reader’s Poll three years in a row for best grooming in the East. It offers a thrilling 3,100-foot summit elevation with a 1,500 feet vertical drop. The resort’s 98 trails are spread across three mountains, providing wonderful views and tons of terrain for all ski levels. There are also 62 miles of cross-country ski trails.

Attitash

Attitash is an upscale destination resort with progressive terrain parks and deep powder glades. It offers a classic ski area with 67 trails for all abilities, but it’s back country glades are not maintained or patrolled and recommended for expert skiers only. There’s also terrain parks, snow tubing, night skiing and cross-country skiing over 310 acres with a 1,750-foot vertical drop. Luxury lodging and dynamic after-ski scene can be found at the Attitash Grand Summit Hotel.

Mount Sunapee

Just an hour and half drive from Boston in New Hampshire’s Lakes region, you’ll find Mount Sunapee and 66 trails, glades, 4 terrain parks and 233 acres of skiable terrain. Mount Sunapee has a lower summit than other New Hampshire ski resorts, coming in at just 2,743 feet, but daily grooming keeps the trails in top condition. The resort offers a nice variety of trails, half of which are geared toward intermediate skiers, as well as a unique Families First package where parents and kids can learn to ski together and a two-hour zip-line adventure with zip-lines, rappels, and a rope bridge.

Cannon Mountain

At 4,080 feet with a 2,180 foot-vertical drop, Cannon Mountain claims New Hampshire’s highest ski area summit and the longest vertical drop. It is located within Franconia Notch State Park, offering a classic state park mountain experience with over 25 miles of trails for avid skiers. You’ll find quieter slops, a dedicated beginner’s area as well as quality extreme terrain for more advanced skiers and exciting terrain parks.

Wildcat Mountain Ski Resort

For an old-fashioned New England ski experience, head to Wildcat Mountain. This classic ski resort offers a homey, no-frills vibe, challenging terrain and the best view in the East. Located in the White Mountain National Forest, you can get a view of the entire Presidential Range from the top of the summit. There are 48 trails with a mix of Green, blue, and black. Although most of the terrain is better suited to upper intermediates and advanced skiers, Wildcat features the longest novice trail in New Hampshire.
